What does Swiss made mean?

The "Swiss Made" label is a mark of quality and origin for products, particularly in the watch industry, but also for other goods made in Switzerland. To qualify for the "Swiss Made" label, products must meet specific standards outlined by Swiss law. Here’s an overview of the main criteria:

1. Swiss Origin Requirements

  • Swiss Made Watches: The most commonly recognized "Swiss Made" standard is for watches. Under the Swissness legislation (revised in 2017), a watch is considered Swiss if:
    • At least 60% of the manufacturing costs are incurred in Switzerland.
    • The movement (the internal mechanism) is Swiss.
    • The movement is assembled and inspected in Switzerland.
    • Final assembly is conducted in Switzerland.
  • Swiss Components: The Swiss movement must be assembled in Switzerland, must constitute at least 50% of the value of the components (excluding assembly cost), and undergo final inspection in Switzerland.

2. Quality Standards

  • Products labeled "Swiss Made" must meet strict quality standards as required by Swiss law, ensuring a reputation for durability, precision, and reliability.
  • For watches, this means they should adhere to high standards in terms of materials and manufacturing processes to uphold the "Swiss Made" prestige.

3. Regulations for Other Products

  • For non-watch products, at least 60% of the production costs must originate in Switzerland, and essential production processes must be carried out in Switzerland.
  • This rule applies to a variety of goods, from food products to industrial items, ensuring that a significant part of the production value is Swiss.

The "Swiss Made" label is heavily protected, and misuse can result in legal action from Swiss authorities. These rules not only safeguard the quality reputation of Swiss products but also support Swiss economic interests by requiring a majority of production to occur within the country.
